Area bombing = terror bombing

Any bombing can be scary.

I thought most military historians agree that Germany effectively lost the war circa 1942. It just had a long wind-down.

20/20 hindsight.

December 1941: Soviet counter-attack before Moscow. Failure to defeat the Soviet Union in a single campaign, and an ill-advised declaration of war against the USA following Pearl Harbor.
October 1942: Defeat at the Second Battle of El Alamein.
November 1942: Encirclement of Sixth Army at Stalingrad. Allied forces land in Vichy North-West Africa.
Early 1943: Final destruction of 6th Army.
May 1943: Final defeat in North Africa. Effective defeat of the U-boats in the North Atlantic. Dams raid.
July/August 1943: Failure of German offensive at Kursk; Red Army immediately goes over to the offensive.
July 1943: Allied invasion of Sicily. Bombing of Hamburg.
September 1943: Allied invasion of Italian mainland, Italy effectively out of the war.
November 1943: Kiev lost.
Late 1943: First long-range escort fighters accompany U.S. Eight Air Force deep into Europe.

... and so on it goes. There were some localised successes for the Germans during that time, but only a few.
