They keep talking about "sexual banter" and actual workplace sexual harassment, but this wasn't that it all. It was a proposition.

Because it exemplifies an important, overarching cultural issue.

It's kind of like the idea that harassment policies are being advocated to remedy the insults Amy Davis Roth (aka Surly Amy) claimed to feel at the TAM conference. She complained about people wearing t-shirts that said "I am not a Skepchick - I am not a woman skeptic - I am just a Skeptic" on them and folks selling jewelry that she objected to. This was so offensive that she thinks it should be remedied by Sexual Harassment policies, meaning that she thinks that this is conduct that she thinks SHOULD BE STOPPED BY THE ORGANIZERS OF CONFERENCES.

This is what folks don't get. They are using rhetorical sleight of hand. They like to talk in general terms of "sexual harassment" (which people generally envision as some serious and repeated sexual conduct that is hostile and offensive), but the examples they cite are things like "elevator guy asks me for coffee" and "swinger hands me a card" and "woman wears a t-shirt that says she disagrees with me..."

If they succeed, they won't succeed just in stopping harassment, which is already pretty much nonexistent at atheist and skeptic events -- they will succeed in silencing OPPOSITION. That is their goal.

I don't follow closely enough to have seen, but I do remember that Ophelia Benson used to write a lot on how the cultural relativism of academia made it hard for westerners to stand up for women's rights in Islamic cultures.

She's on FTB, but her name is brought up a lot in Skepchick discussions.

What institutionalized misogyny are you referring to?

Nothing but the constant barrage of anti-abortion bills, attempts to limit access to contraception, blocking equal-pay-for-equal-work, things like that. I'd provide references, but I have to leave for work in about 15 minutes.
