Entropy reversal

Post by Clinton Huxley » Tue Jun 16, 2009 7:12 pm

One can make cheese out of milk but could one make milk out of cheese?

I've run out of milk but I do have cheese.

Yes. Feed your cheese to a cow. Or your pregnant mistress.

I can't think of any process by which the lysed proteins in the cheese matrix might be reassembled into casein and the lost whey might be recovered from miles away at the cheese manufacturers' buildings without a considerable investment of time, energy, and chemical finesse. It would be much more efficient to simply buy more milk.

Technically, every chemical reaction is reversible (as long as we keep away from nuclear chemistry). Realistically, there are many reactions the reversal of which is extremely energetically unfavorable and in these cases it's usually a better idea to go get more raw materials and start over.

If entropy were reversed; could one suck the wee out of the toilet with ones urethra without touching the water?

Meanwhile, the sun would be busy sucking heat from Earth and our anabolic pathways would cease to function properly.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.
