There's not many ways you can do it. We went over this in a Russian cinema class I took at Purdue. I dibs Eisenstein before the class started because of the era he worked in. The prof said I could have him if I would address that legend, mainly because he was sick of doing it himself.Svartalf wrote:I know... actually, my movie geek friend tells me it's more of a Hidden Fortress ripoff
But he says that the scene where you see the Emperor in his dark hood, and surrounded by storm troopers in Emprier Strikes Back is ripped off straight from Eisenstein.

He has to use style to cover a lack of pretty colors. He did that.Svartalf wrote:Old Sergei, working in B&W as he did certainly had less options than lucas did.
BTW, did you ever watch "Doctor Zhivago"? The opening scene where they're going to the funeral and the people occupy the bottom 2% of the screen, pure Eisenstein.

Re: Christian Tomatoes
I think I did... I was young enough to have forgotten though... and I wouldn't recognize Eisenstein's style if he got zombie and came back to bite me... I'd need to watch his stuff first... attentively, because what I saw was like, before I got into college, and I didn't pay sufficient attention (not to mention all the classics like Aleksandr Nevsky that I simply never got to watch)

Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

I had a prof try to argue that Dr. Z was a war story. I said, "It's a about a Russian poet that's banging two hawties."

I've heard people say that Boule de Suif, by Guy de maupassant, is a tale of the hardship of war (rather than one about the French bourgeois being slimeballs)Gawdzilla Sama wrote:I had a prof try to argue that Dr. Z was a war story. I said, "It's a about a Russian poet that's banging two hawties."
*cough* could do... now, I've got a backlog that could cover months even if I did a serious job of it...

Beverly Hills 90210 was an expression of existentialist angst experienced by young adults in the impersonal, meaningless dystopia that is current American culture.
I might be on to something here.
