Christians sue for right to burn gay teen novel
Christians sue for right to burn gay teen novel
A group of Wisconsin Christians filed a lawsuit seeking the right to burn a gay teen novel. The group claimed the novel is "explicitly vulgar, and anti-Christian". The novel in question is Francesca Lia Block's Baby Be-Bop, a young adult novel in which a boy, struggling with his homosexuality, is beaten up by a homophobic gang.
According to the American Library Association the complaint also demands $120,000 in compensatory damages. The complaint has been lodged by a group identified as the Christian Civil Liberties Union. Their suit claims that "the plaintiffs, all of whom are elderly, claim their mental and emotional well-being was damaged by this book at the library."
It seems the legal challenge follows a lengthy campaign by some West Bend residents to restrict access to teenage books they deemed sexually explicit from library shelves, which was eventually thrown out at the start of June.
Some things never change. Here we are in the 21st century and we are still plagued by book burning religious zealots. The whole episode is quite repugnant. Clearly the lawsuit is frivolous and will go no where. However, it does serve to hi light the hate and ignorance the Christian community harbors. The blatant homophobia and bigotry is nothing new for Christians. Indeed, it has been their modus operandi for centuries

Is it currently illegal to burn books in their town / state?
Surely they can burn what they like - except crosses on niggers' lawns - as long as they pay for it, can't they? Why have a lawsuit?

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

Is it legal to burn the Bible, Koran, etc.? If not, then this is sheer hypocrisy. But if it is legal, then ...

The hall monitors want to decide what reality will be used in their area. Nothing new about that.

I don't like book X. I believe my local library shouldn't have any. It does. My mental well-being is thereby severely compromised. I'm gonna go file a lawsuit to burn it, kthx. Actually, fuck this shit, let's just burn the entire library! (just check that the Bible/Quran aren't in it -- like the Muslim invaders did to ancient Indian universities (random wiki fact
))
On that matter, there's some internet content that hurts my well-being too. Let's go burn teh internetz!
Those people should've just been kept illiterate for our greater good...

How many of them have actually read the book in question? I'm going to throw out a wild guess and go for "0" - and the bandwagon is creaking as they jump on with indigent righteousness.
What are we complaining about?
No clue, just keep waving your torch!

It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

Personally I'd love to write a book that's the centre of bookburning. Not only does the controversy sell more books, but they have to buy books to burn them in the first place! Hell, I'd give them a bulk discount and donate some lighter fluid if they promise to do it in a big fire as publically as possible.

The trick is to fight hard against the book being burned. Then the fundies will think it's important, so they'll be more determined.CP wrote:Personally I'd love to write a book that's the centre of bookburning. Of course the "author" and "publisher" need to fight (and make sure they lose) -- you need to get the "battle" in the media after all, but I'm sure a bulk discount could be slipped in there somewhere.Gawdzilla wrote:The trick is to fight hard against the book being burned.
