Why don't religious leaders..
..have the following debate:
'My Religion is Better than Yours and why".
I'm half serious. Why do you think they wouldn't consider it?

Because they know they'd more-or-less get all of their own arguments thrown back at them.Rum wrote:..have the following debate:

I'm not so sure. They must know that faith is about revelation and not rationalism, so perhaps they know they can't have a rational discussion.Horwood Beer-Master wrote:Because they know they'd more-or-less get all of their own arguments thrown back at them.Rum wrote:..have the following debate:

Generally becasue religiosity is held, by the religious and the not-so-religious alike, to be a virtue-bestowing, privilege-endowing state of being. "They may be wrong, but at least they're not atheists!"Rum wrote:..have the following debate:

Nice avatar by the way Rum.

I think a major factor for the reluctance to discuss which religion is better is a more or less conscious awareness that by questioning the validity of any one particular theology one opens the gate to questioning the validity of religions in general. That's why there are so many ecumenical movements and occasional sentiments expressing the belief that even a non-theist like, say, a Hindu can be admitted into the Christian heaven if he has lead a morally good life.

I think it's in part to avoid the doubled edge, and in part because they prefer audiences which don't talk back.
these are things we think we know
these are feelings we might even share
these are thoughts we hide from ourselves
these are secrets we cannot lay bare.

Damn! I was hoping that title was going to be continued with "... just fuck off".
Libertarianism: The belief that out of all the terrible things governments can do, helping people is the absolute worst.
Re: Why don't religious leaders..
If two religious leaders debate, the result will simply be to cause the audience to question and wonder, "Why do I believe this faith over that faith?" In fact the existence of so many people believing other things is a big reason why so many people first question their beliefs.

Re: Why don't religious leaders..
Having given this some drunken thought it occurs to me that there is some weird human need to believe that we are in possession of the absolute truth of things. It seems very strong. Therefore why risk our absolute truth but putting it up against the other guy who also has possession of the absolute truth!
