Smile, you GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator you! Or like I like to call you: Mr. Holmes, the 30,000-pound (13.6 metric tons) precision-guided bunker buster. That's 25,000 pounds heavier than the largest bunker-buster available.

The US Air Force said yesterday that they are going to buy an arsenal of these bombs, which will be incorporated into the B-2A bomber fleet. Manufactured by Boeing, they are designed to destroy any bunker buried under ground, so you know these are designed for the Kim Jong-Ils, Bin Ladens, and Ahmadinejads of this world. If you fall into any of these three categories, mark your calendars now: The Holmes will reach operational status in June 2012.

The GPS-guided GBU-57A/B has a 2.7 metric ton high explosive warhead, and can penetrate 200 feet (60 meters) of 5,000 psi reinforced concrete, 26 feet (8 meters) of 10,000 psis reinforced concrete, or 130 feet (40 meters) of moderately hard rock

Unfortunately, the boys over at ATS have pointed out that it will have limited use. (<hint> "2012" </hint>)

Just your garden-variety end of the world scenario. :coffee:

Congreves sufficed in my day. Damned flighty things though, more trouble than they were worth, in my opinion.

You can't stop progress. Mr. Whitehead's new automobile torpedo is said to the greatest threat to the Royal Navy since Emma Hamilton.

I deplore all this machinery. The service is stuffed with mechanics and other riff-raff these days. No nobility about it at all. Progress? Don't make me laugh...

Surely the Industrial Age has brought us the wonders of smoke-belching mechanical monsters on the sea as well as on the land so that we can "relocate" more quickly when the wicket is very, very sticky.

When it comes to fleeing, I'd not wager a clipped farthing on a brass valve. I trust only my own sturdy, cherry-pickered limbs.

Ah, but a steam leviathan such as the one below can make upwards of thirty miles in a single hour!

All that shunting and hooting? No thank you. I'd rather do 20 miles in the hour and look dashing. No-one ever wooed a fair maid by leaning over the side of the footplate covered in oil.

Ah, yes, then perhaps a leisurely trip from London to faraway Bolton via water?

Thats more my style, lazing about with a cheroot on a narrow boat, with a Duchesses daughter or two. Splendid.
