Yeah, it would be good for macros, I think. Reduce the shadows tremendously.

How big are these wolves?

Top out at about 100 pounds. But I was thinking of pix of specimens the keepers collect, most of which you don't know about.FBM wrote:How big are these wolves?

Re: Which camera do I want?
Ring flash units tend to be most useful for very close up work, of the sort I do with insects. Not sure how useful they would be with organisms the size of the average wolf, unless you're getting up close and personal enough with them to risk becoming lunch.
However, if you're looking at getting close up photos of a wolf's face with even lighting, then provided the wolf in question behaves itself, and doesn't try to turn your face into a snack, you could probably press the ring flash into service for that sort of shot. However, that's the sort of shot I'd only take if [1] I really knew what I was doing around large predatory animals, and [2] I had trained professionals alongside me in case things went tits up, and the subject decided I'd look much nicer once it had bitten my arms off.

Thanks, Cali. There will be some extreme macro work, imaging samples before they are frozen for reference, things like that. The Center doesn't have a good camera for that purpose at this time.

Samples? As in tissue, blood, etc?
Yikes, this is starting to turn into the CSI thread.

You could probably do as well with two or three bright lights if you're doing this indoors.
But outside it would be useful. It's hard to get good pics in the shade of the woods sometimes.

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Re: Which camera do I want?
The lighting in the vet trailer is "quaint", so any help I can give it would be good. I'll have to build another PVC camera stand as they want all the pix taken from a consistent distance, pre-macro, for reference. I have a mat with 1 millimeter grid to use as a base.Robert_S wrote:You could probably do as well with two or three bright lights if you're doing this indoors.
