So, for all society cares they can marry 5 people and a goat together (do they?) and can already refuse to marry anyone they wish, divorced, heathens, muslims, gays, black people.....that won't change.

and if society later decides that marrying 5 people and a goat together is the way forward, then that decision has SFA to do with the Popophiles.

Of course if the Catholic Church felt that strongly they could decide that "marriage" in a church was good enough on it's own and forgo the benefits of being involved in the legal side - but they won't do that because the numbers getting married in there churches would drop.
Here in Ireland, once the happy couple have done the needful in front of the altar, they must go off and sign the register in some back room to make it legal in the eyes of the state. So the Church already acknowledges that Catholic marriage =/= legal marriage.

Same here, you have to have a license to get married, church services alone have no legal standing that I'm aware of. The law requires witnesses to affirm the union took place, God's word alone does not stand.

Hey - if you think that's complicated, try being a Catholic trying to marry a non-Catholic, in a non-Catholic church, with a retired non-Catholic priest as the celebrant. I had to write to the twatting Catholic bishop to make sure it was all above board (for the Catholic Church, anyway). Things could have been so much easier if I'd figured it out sooner. :fp:

Same in Thailand - the marriage in the Temple ain't legal, and therefore is not recorded anywhere that can be checked.....albeit amongst the peasantry is still widely accepted as married. although the smarter women do insist on also getting legal.

Caught more than a few foreigners out has that! (woman already married and simply (still?!) making money for her "brother")
