Blasphemy
Hey all,
I, despite my atheism, have a tenancy to blasphem... I.e. "jesus fucking christ" "for christs sake" "omfg!" Etc etc. As an atheist what should I be saying? "the natural selections sake!" "thank evolution for that!" "oh my fucking Darwin!" does that sound correct? Which begs the question... is it blasphemy if god doesn't exist?

Re: Blasphemy
Perhaps you should think about why you say such things? Is it for your own sake or is it for the effect they have on others? Is it involuntary or do you choose your words carefully?
I tend to avoid using religious exclamations except as a deliberate parody ("Christ in a gay bar!" is one of my favourites!) and substitute things like "For fuck's sake!" instead. But I am not dogmatic about it - it's just words.
Let's face it, many common words and phrases have a religious origin - "Goodbye" is a contraction of "God be with ye", for example. Just words. They mean as much (or as little) as you and the person that you are speaking to attribute to them.

A book is a version of the world. If you do not like it, ignore it; or offer your own version in return.

You talk to God, you're religious. God talks to you, you're psychotic.

I use "Christ!", "Lord!", "For God's sake!", all the golden-oldies, and not just involuntarily or in a knee-jerk way. Just a habit, I guess.

Is it blasphemy if god doesn't exist? Well of course it isn't.matthewr88 wrote:Hey all,

I suggest you wander into the middle of the Riyadh just after Friday prayers and shout as loud as you can 'Fuck Allah, Mohamed, the Koran and all their virgins' and take note of the muted and measured response you receive..

I curse Odin a lot. So far the hammer hasn't fallen.
Re: Blasphemy
You can't actually blaspheme if you don't belong to the religion of whose divinity you are blaspheming. It's a logical impossibility. So don't worry about it.

Re: Blasphemy
I say the stuff I do out of habit I suppose... as for it being blasphemy I think its down to what other people feel, and their beliefs. I could say god is a cock sucker and I wouldn't be concerned because I don't believe and couldn't give a shit. However, if I were a believer I wouldn't say it, and if someone else did I would consider it blasphemy. So it boils down to am I concerned with upsetting other people, and this is the issue most atheists face I feel... do we spoil the illusions of the gullible by letting them know there its no Santa or tooth fairy... the worst crime in some people's minds

Re: Blasphemy
I say "oh for fuck's sake" alot, but often I'm to pissed-off to speak after the first three words so it just comes out as "oh for fuck..."

Re: Blasphemy
I used to but realised the stupidity of invoking a deity that doesn't exist so I just go for compound swearing now
Outside the ordered universe is that amorphous blight of nethermost confusion which blasphemes and bubbles at the center of all infinity—the boundless daemon sultan Azathoth, whose name no lips dare speak aloud, and who gnaws hungrily in inconceivable, unlighted chambers beyond time and space amidst the muffled, maddening beating of vile drums and the thin monotonous whine of accursed flutes.

Re: Blasphemy
A woman once told me not to blaspheme in her presence. I told her to get the fuck out of there if she didn't like how I talked because she was not dictating my language. Sadly, she couldn't get her husband to take issue with me. I was quite ready.

Re: Blasphemy
It's a natural instinct that some people rein in, some don't.
I went to a catholic school, and one of the nuns used to say "bless us and save us", instead of bloody hell.
And we say flipping instead of fucking. and blooming instead of bloody. And clot, instead of cunt.
And cor blimey was originally "god blind me", apparently.

Re: Blasphemy
One of my cousins (from the US) keeps telling me to watch my language, especially in front of his daughters. I fear that will stay a bone of contention between us, as I'm pretty sure they hear a lot worse than 'Fuck' at school, so don't see why I should rein in my instincts and needs (swearing does soothe the nerves), just because he's a half baked puritan.
