Church 'does not own marriage'?

Church 'does not own marriage'

The Church does not "own" marriage nor have the exclusive right to say who can marry, a government minister has said.

Equalities minister Lynne Featherstone said the government was entitled to introduce same-sex marriages, which she says would be a "change for the better".

Her comments come as ministers prepare to launch a public consultation on legalising gay marriage next month.

Traditionalists want the law on marriage to remain unchanged.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Ms Featherstone said: "Some believe the government has no right to change it (marriage) at all; they want to leave tradition alone.

'Reflect society'

"I want to challenge that view - it is the government's fundamental job to reflect society and to shape the future, not stay silent where it has the power to act and change things for the better."

Ms Featherstone, a Liberal Democrat minister, responded to comments made by Lord Carey, a former Archbishop of Canterbury, who said that "not even the Church" owns marriage.

She said: "(Marriage) is owned by neither the state nor the Church, as the former Archbishop Lord Carey rightly said.

"It is owned by the people."

Ms Featherstone also appealed to people not to "polarise" the debate about same-sex marriages.

"This is not a battle between gay rights and religious beliefs," she said.

"This is about the underlying principles of family, society and personal freedoms."

Not only does church not allow marriage it should be a criminal offence for one to take place in any religious environment including churches (which is the law in several European countries).

Marriage = secular contract created and recognised by the state, its has fuck all to do with priests. rabbis or anyone else. If they want to do some voodoo blessings afterwards then thats their business

Actually, marriage is strictly a religious ceremony.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Lol! - nah, it was just co-opted by religions as it was something that folks have always done - and for religions they had the choice of banning it or branding it. Hell, even many animals pair up - SFA to do will any Gods / Religions.

The easy answer for Christians is.......not to marry a homosexual :hehe: .

I am sure that the Archbishop can see what is coming next - once the C of E starts discriminating against certain people getting married in their Registries they wil lose the in church registry and will have to do what the other religions all do - have the couples register seperately (at the Registry Office) ......3 guess what effect that will have on numbers getting married in Church :hehe: .

FWIW I was always of the opinion that "Marriage" was an outdated concept - until I got married. Helluva thing, I guess some sort of primal desire :hehe: . Kinda miss being married :( "You, me, everything" :cuddle:

Except of course the religious solemnisations are only a formality to present the fact of the union to the community, there have been marriages (and rather distinct statutes for actual spouses and mere concubines) even in culture where clans were too isolated for public religious ceremonies to matter and marriages were either private arrangements, or even totally informal.
