Sure, blame the Dutch guy for answering the question.

See, you Dutch are too serious - that's what the guy said, anyway. :mod:

I kept comparing his Dutch with our next door neighbor's SIL and grandkids - they make a much more "hoarse" and "rolling" general sound, as if the speech came from the very back of their throats most of the time. I think they are from whatever passes as "deep south" in the Netherlands, but don't ask me to be able to point that out on a map...

German and French sounded OK enough to me - but there are so many ways to speak either that I don't know how meaningful that is. The cook who taught me most of the French I have since forgotten - one could have cut her pronunciation into slices and put them on bread for really nourishing and strong sandwiches. I doubt many in Paris would even have agreed to listen to her. She was born in a small village near Albi and had worked her whole life in Albi - was serenely uninterested in visiting Paris, and not that keen even on Toulouse.

And don't get me started on Schwyzerdütsch... :nono:

I'm not sure if I qualify as fluent en Anglais so that's zero languages.
I wouldn't want to learn 11 languages I'd settle for 3 or 4.

The Germanic ones sound authentic enough. He should learn Old Norse. To see where Germanics used to be. Plus you can use it in Iceland.

I guess the guy is legit, from what you all say, then.

French is not bad, but audibly foreign, pronunciation is fait, but intonation has something off, and his grammar is not quite it, a sentence or two are bararous.
Greek... intonation is off, and he still hasn't mastered the tonic accent (basically, he sounds like I would if I were able to make up that kind of sentence)
Same in Russian, he hasn't the tonic accent up to snuff and that makes him sound off...

and I'm actually surprised I suddenly became aware of the fact that, while completely unable to speak them, I have enough familiarity with the sound of these languages to recognize that some words were not quite right.

Is Afrikaans THAT different from European Dutch?

I always thought the two were just like English and Merkan, except flipped across the equator rather than the mid Atlantic.
