Maybe it's time to claim that the word "Atheist" when used by Theists is offensive - except when used to describe self.

He makes a good point about the discrimination bit althougt using racial epitaphs to make your point is stupid.

He raises a good point, but I don't think his suggestion is practical.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

You seriously think that no atheists have been burnt or hung, whether the burning was done by rednecks or other religious bigots?Crumple wrote:I'd like to see a few atheists being burnt or lynched by the rednecks dressed in bedsheets before it gets the credibility needed?![]()

No he doesn't. You can choose not to be an atheist, you can't choose not to be black.redunderthebed wrote:He makes a good point about the discrimination bit althougt using racial epitaphs to make your point is stupid.
Therefore, atheists are discriminated against on account of their political/social activism and beliefs, not on some innate characteristic that they can't change. And discrimination against persons on account of their political or social activism or their beliefs is called "freedom of association" and it's a civil right.
Sucks to be an atheist, but then again, most of them richly deserve to be discriminated against and marginalized by society, because they are inveterate assholes, untrustworthy and intolerant jerks.

Of course. More importantly, you absolutely choose how you act and how and when you reveal those beliefs. And it is those acts and revelations upon which anyone is absolutely entitled to discriminate against you if they don't like what you do or what you believe.Robert_S wrote:You choose what you believe?Seth wrote:No he doesn't. Thus, being homosexual is a status, against which the law can proscribe discrimination. But ACTING gay (or dressing that way) is not a status, it's an action, and a voluntary action at that, which MAY be discriminated against. For example, if you work for an employer as a representative of his business, and he sets a dress and conduct code for his representatives that requires males to wear conservative black business suits, ties, black socks and highly-polished shoes and requires them to present an appropriate appearance and behavior when representing the company, a homosexual who insists on cross-dressing or wearing flamboyant attire or behaving in a manner that the boss feels fails to represent his business properly to his clients is fully justified in sanctioning or firing the employee for violation of that dress/conduct code.
You are allowed to believe anything you like, but that doesn't mean you have any right to expect or demand others associate with you if you express those beliefs and they disagree with them. Their right not to associate with you outweighs your desire that they do associate with you.

Re: Hey niggers!
Perhaps. Perhaps not. I have been told repeatedly that atheists don't believe in anything related to theism. This, of course, is all but universally untrue, which makes most atheists Atheists, particularly those who carp about being discriminated against because they are "atheists" when in fact they are "Atheists."Robert_S wrote:I see. But there's no reason that people can't discriminate against you for being an atheist either. People don't need to justify why they discriminate against someone they don't like, or whose beliefs, or lack thereof, they find to be repulsive or objectionable.
Again, their right to pick and choose with whom they will associate outweighs your desire to be accepted by them. This goes for atheists, Atheists, and everybody else.

Re: Hey niggers!
I think this is a brilliant idea.
Apart from two problems.
Number one, what do you call a black atheist?
And number two, it would set back the chances of atheist politicians in the USA.
Because we all know that America will never elect a nigger as president.
