Re: 75% of Americans Too Fat or Dumb to Join Army
Yeah, those McDonald's "meal deals" aren't all that cheap. I think like a quarter pounder with cheese, fries and a drink is pushing $7 now. Certainly $6 and change. Breakfast at McDonalds is about $5 now (egg mcmuffin, drink and hash brown totals at almost $5). So, for three meals a day at McD's you're talking something on the order of $16 or $17 per person, or thereabouts, and that's without "super-sizing" anything...lol.Gawdzilla wrote:Toss in 1/4 pound of lean burger (browned) and the sauce is better. Cooking at home and packing lunches, I family of 4 can probably still eat for $15 a day, if frugality is observed. They wouldn't be eating high-on-the-hog, but they'd be eating.
Heck, half the wealthier parents I know are still making their kids "mac-n-cheese" and cutting up hot dogs and tater tots for their kids anyway - so it's not like people are really feeding their children arugula salads with sides of mixed vegetables and lean pan-seared ahi tuna....

I always think of that when I find myself at Buca di Beppo or Olive Garden. They're serving $2 worth of food for $13.95, and it's not even as good as when I make it myself at home....Gawdzilla wrote:Toss in 1/4 pound of lean burger (browned) and the sauce is better. There was a tv series called Economy Gastronomy over here a few years ago. It's eye opening when you realise how much food you waste. You can eat well and cheaply, if you can be bothered to do other than press the buttons on the microwave.Coito ergo sum wrote:I always think of that when I find myself at Buca di Beppo or Olive Garden. Very true. And, we love taking left-overs to work for lunch. I recommend everyone doing an experiment -- keep track or itemize one month of normal food expenses, including going out to dinner and buying lunches while at work. Then, commit to one month of not buying any food at a restaurant. Make food at home for the entire month. It is amazing how much money is saved.Clinton Huxley wrote:There was a tv series called Economy Gastronomy over here a few years ago. It's eye opening when you realise how much food you waste. Yup. I don't understand where this notion comes from, that poor people are forced to eat Mickey Ds because they can't afford healthy food. When I was a poor college kid, I couldn't afford to eat McDonalds. I had to make due with groceries: rice, vegetables, fruits, frozen vegies, tuna sandwiches, turkey sandwiches, vegi sandwiches, beans, pasta. I mean, you can buy enormous bags of apples, oranges, potatoes, onions, beans, rice, etc, for dirt cheap. And water is a hell of a lot cheaper than soda. Back then, I had no trouble staying thin.
Now I'm getting a bit soft in the midsection 'cause I can afford to eat salmon, ribeyes, and New York strips all the time. The scotch, whiskey, and wine probably aren't helping either.
