Re: Nerd needed - can i use a wireless router as a repeater?
Depends on the router. If it has "bridge mode" in it, you likely can use it. Usually though you need a "wireless access point" WAP to create an extended wifi network.
This is a very common thing for companies to do, so it's easy to do. A WAP is designed to be used as a "repeater" to extend your wifi router's signal. You can get them in both G and N flavors, but they will always be somewhat slower than a direct link. Just read the manual and set it up in "bridge" mode (don't forget to use encryption/access control though) and put it within good range of your wifi router and bingo, extended wifi network with no cable to the WAP. You can repeat the process pretty much as many times as you like with other WAPs.

Good! I currently have two LAN cables running to the Entertainment center. Piggybacking would reduce that to one.Feck wrote:It is possible, I found this http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/asking-h ... her-3.html so if you still need the info ,join the sky forum and ask there .

That degree of self-revelation is not required, but I wouldn't chastise anyone for the occasional self-gratification. I even indulge in the occasional mid-week fiddling, tbh.Clinton Huxley wrote:Thanks all for the suggestions, will have a fiddle at the weekend.
As if the banjo wasn't enough, I might add.

Just post it here.

Re: Nerd needed - can i use a wireless router as a repeater?
Why would you need two cables? I assume you have two ethernet devices at the entertainment center so you're using two ports on your router, one for each.Gawdzilla wrote:Good! This is unnecessary. You never need more than one "home run" cable to the router to a specific location, and then you "star out" from there. What you need at the entertainment center is an ethernet SWITCH. You can get a 4 port switch for less than 40 bucks. You run one cable from the router to the entertainment center, then plug it into the switch, then plug your other devices (including a wifi wireless access point/range extender) into the other three switch ports. The switch handles all of the communications between devices and the router.
Using a switch with a wired connection to your WAP range extender will give you faster link service on wireless than using the WAP as a repeater for your wireless/wired router.
Always use high-speed ethernet cables between devices whenever possible for best speed (if you're upgrading, go to gigabit ethernet for best performance, but you have to upgrade your router, switches and ethernet cards in devices), and use wifi when you cannot or do not wish to use a cable.

Re: Nerd needed - can i use a wireless router as a repeater?
The LAN cables are plugged into a repeater that uses the household wiring as a LAN. We can't put any holes in the walls, so this repeater allows us to use hardwires rather than WIFI. So, two cables, one for the Blu-ray, one for the cable box. With a router I can use one long cable and two short cables and save a port on the repeater.
