Meh, he didn't like "Wolverine" either. :read:
I don't like Paco any more then.

Saw this the other day - my conclusion? OK film, but it just wasn't Star Trek.

To me it was more like a piece of Star Trek internet fanfic, almost as if a group of fans had taken a bit of fanfic they had written and decided to put on a play based on it, only for some film studio to take their script, find a bunch of proper actors and special effects people, and make a film out of it.

Visually and stylistically it was brilliant, and the characters were mostly good (with the exception of Kirk who was annoying - OK, so the original Kirk was also annoying, but this guy was a whole other kind of annoying), but I cannot, and will never, count it as Star Trek.

I did hate the overly contrived way all the main characters just happened to get promoted to their 'appropriate' positions all at more or less the same time, and I felt more than a little patronised by the clumsy way they kept inserting references and in-jokes as a blatant sop to try to appease us proper Trek fans into not whingeing about all the blatant mucking around with everything they were doing - that didn't work with me at all.

My real fear though is that the real motive for changing the timeline is so that they can rattle out a whole load of sequels without having to bother whether events fit with what was supposed to happen or not.

Of course it is - it gives them carte blanche. I love the movie and am a "real" Trek fan but then as far as I am concerned Star trek has always changed "canon" when it suits.. it doesn't bother me.. it's not an historical document, it's a piece of entertainment

I haven't given a damn about Star Trek since Star Wars came out. The ST movies just don't come close.

I used to be a big Star Wars fan but since everyone treats it like the "Greatest Film Ever" [TM] and the prequels I have become tired of it.. personally I don't know why it has to be one or the other.. one is science fiction and one is fantasy

I like them both, too. I watched Star Trek with my Daddy when I was a little girl. It's very sentimental for me. I also really enjoy all the Star Wars movies.

It was the first SciFi action film to take special effects seriously, IMHO. It deserves a "milestone" rank. I had been into scifi for *mumble* years before it came out, and was always disappointed with the FX in the movies. ("2001" was an FX movie set in space, and monumentally boring.) It certainly wasn't the "Greatest Film Ever", but it was the best we had at the time.
