Don't worry, my next camera will be as flexible as I can find. I was used to changing lens on the Mamiya, and appreciated the availability of the option.FBM wrote:Beware. I don't think you can change lenses on those. Your zooming would be very limited. I was looking at similar ones earlier today and got excited about the price until I noticed that you're committed to the lens it comes with...

Ah. It just occurred to me that getting one with interchangeable lens options runs the price right back up there. Even higher, once you start having to get a collection of lenses for the various conditions you'll be shooting under. What kind of conditions so you expect? Distance and lighting wise?

My most important work will be getting pix of the wolves for documentation of behaviors. So I will be some distance from them, with wildly variable lighting and very small windows to take the pictures. Not really much of a challenge.FBM wrote:Ah. 2 parts is good. You can upgrade body or eBay it and keep lenses.

Re: Which camera do I want?
Sound philosophy. A collection of lens will migrate easily to a new body. And having a specialized lens, like a super long telephoto, can be a real advantage at times. It's a lot easier to get candid shots if the subject don't know they're been photographed. (Of course I would only do this in public setting. I would never point a telephoto at an apartment building or such. Seriously. No kidding. I shit you not.)Tero wrote:2 parts is good. You can upgrade body or eBay it and keep lenses.

Have you considered getting a used camera, 'zilla? You can save a lot of $$ and get some real quality that way.

You'd have to ask the seller if that option is available.

That's over the top even with a good toy budget.

Just thought I'd throw it out there, since your first choice was in that price range. I think if you get a good bodyGawdzilla wrote:That's over the top even with a good toy budget.I'm thinking body, one "general" lens and one telephoto.

Are you sold on Canon, or are you open to other suggestions? I'm not a committed fan of any brand in particular.

I'm not committed to any brand at this time. The rig you posted is without lens, so it would be over the top when I bought one. I'm trying to keep it under $2,000 for body and two lenses.FBM wrote:Just thought I'd throw it out there, since your first choice was in that price range. and are careful in lens selection, you should be better off.

Re: Which camera do I want?
I think the Fujifilm S5 Pro is still a very good camera for the price. Nowhere near obsolete yet, and produces professional-quality results. The camera I've been using for the past few years is the S2, a couple of generations older than the S5. If you go for big name brands like Canon or Nikon, you're paying a good part of the price difference for the brand recognition.Gawdzilla wrote:I'm not committed to any brand at this time.
