Atheism as a label,movement,etc. is starting to sour for me

I had when people try to tell me I believe in 'nothing'. How is that even possible?!
I think their logic words thusly: If you don't believe in something (for them meaning supernatural, wooish or bulllshit) you must believe in nothing.
It's a piss poor effort to denigrate in most cases and is almost always said with a scoff. As if the whole idea of not believing in God is laughable. Which is ironic because religion is always a great source of comedy (as George Carlin, Dave Allen and Monty Python taught us) were as atheism isn't (as Dane Cook and South Park so painfully taught us).

I recently had a discussion with a Muslim fellow on another forum about me calling myself 'atheist', which he says I shouldn't. He did, however, say that 'all atheists are rats'. I wasn't particularly offended by that, because rats are intelligent, adaptable and sociable mammals, but I understood that he meant it in a negative way. He said that instead of calling myself 'atheist' I should call myself 'nothing', and I replied that I am not 'nothing' because that implies never having thought about the matter, whereas I'd actually given it a great deal of consideration. He told me that my thoughts couldn't possibly be summed up with 'atheist' and asked me to elaborate.
Of course, when I did, he started arguing with me about my thoughts...

You have to be "something" or you're "nothing". That's the rules.
