Re: Richard Dawkins: 'Jesus would have been an atheist"

Considering the only thing that makes the God on a stick relevant was the conviction that he was the Living God, the physical manifestation of "the word" and that the orthodox church was a corrupt den of fools and sycophants, I think if he were around today he'd be some babbling fucking nutcase on youtube that many of those involved with rationalism would delight in tearing to shreds. Eventually he'd probably bomb an abortion clinic, or murder some priests at which point we'd all be asking why he wasn't charged with terrorism, that or he'd have a compound, lots of wives and guns and they'd eventually either commit suicide by ATF or poison or the like.

I think the God on a stick was probably suffering from the same kind of mental instability as all the latter claimants have been.

Edited to add.

I think that he probably wasn't even the first, just his cult was gifted by having people around it that could write, not that common then, nor even now.

The Jesus dude might have been a scam, but those disciples, they were dim. None qualified as atheist. Except Richard.

See parroty thread.

I do wonder if he's actually a cultural christian rather than a cultural atheist ever since he said he was a cultural christian? :smoke:

What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

Nah, just a stuffed up move in the game of Romano-Judaic Realpolitik, a move which his followers saw a great opportunity for spin...

We'll never nail down all the facts but there is enough absent evidence and gaps in the story to suggest it's all cobblers. :smoke:

closet deist? for a guy who's touted as the son of Dog, that's an accusation that doesn't make sense.

Nothing I've read in the gospels makes me believe he was a Camping level moron, what's worse, most of the apocalyptic stuff is in John, which may be the most dubious of the four...

From what I get, he was an end of times guy mostly because so many of his followers were convinced he was one.
