Precisely the problem.

People who don't consider their "overtones" need to not be scaring off the customers. And they need to not be in a position to. The responsible people need to see to that.
Robert_S wrote:My perspective is that whatever disagreements we might have in the Serious Stuff, we should try to keep them civil and friendly enough that we can exchange banter in the Pub at the same time. This is not my Official Moderator Policy, but my feeling as an ordinary member.
When someone who's on staff starts with the "overtones" I'm not civil any more. That's an attack and I treat it as such. That's not gonna change.

Moderators who don't understand why they have power- and it's not to deter evildoers, that's propaganda- need to not have power. Period. Give it to people who deserve it and take it from people who don't. Don't try to give it to me; I got better things to do. But don't expect I'm not gonna cloud up and rain all over someone who tries to fuck with me, no matter what power they think they have. I have some power myself, and I know perfectly fucking well how to use it, I would hope that's becoming obvious by now.

My recommendation is avoid attacking me. You'll find it works pretty well. If you haven't you can ask what's going on and get an honest answer, without any checking to see if you're playing games or not. You might have noticed you don't like the way I check if people are playing games. It's just best all 'round if that box doesn't get opened.

Going by the spirit of the rules is dangerous since I'm liable to be biased to one side or the other, then there is the danger of over-correction where I could be inclined to come down unfairly hard the side I personally favor.
Understood.

The way to handle that is not to set things in stone. You're gonna do something stupid every so often; back down when you do.

I can't believe I'm having to explain this to you. Seriously.
Robert_S wrote:That's why I'm glad I'm not expected to make these decisions alone. It may take hours for the other mods to weigh in, but then we get (usually, hopefully) a fairer decision.
Not when you have the chickenshit gangfuck mentality those individuals showed, you won't.
Robert_S wrote:I'll admit that I should have handled the situation earlier in this thread better. I actually got mod-o-fied in the middle of all that and was still trying to adjust to my new role here. I'll review the whole thing and give an apology for what I honestly believe warrants one.
Just keep the people with the gangfuck mentality away from me. After a while I might be a bit less cross about it. Apologies are a good idea; they indicate a certain amount of sincere regret. I have sincere regret, as well; I regret the situation turned out the way it did. But I didn't do it; all I did was point it out, and then came the gangfuck.

Fix that.

Schneibster, do you read your posts? How do they sound to you?

EDIT:

BTW, you and I have something in common...we live in adjacent counties. (that is, if you live where you photograph sea otters)

Schneibster, you are not a customer, so please do not attempt to order us around.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

I really don't invest much in how most people think my posts sound. They sound like me, to me. It's called "being honest."

It disturbs me that most people seem to think there's something wrong with being honest.

Perhaps if I hadn't had the experiences I have here I might sound different. In fact, I did, before those experiences happened.

Maybe if folks liked how I sounded before better they'd like to apologize for causing those experiences and make some sort of commitment to not behaving like assholes in the future.

Maybe if they don't I really don't give a fuck.

Attack is sometimes the best form of defence. Whether it was in this case is debatable, but given your attitude early on, it was understandable at least.

Excellent advice. I hope you took note.

Ah, no, you didn't take your own advice, what a pity.

Then why do you think others should give a fuck, if you don't?

I don't know what you sounded like before. Right now you sound bitter, angry and slightly paranoid to me...not that you care about my opinion. :ask:

"Fix that" is the order.

What I, and most likely some others will do if you continue to give orders is to not take you seriously. How threatening is that? :dunno:

Contrary to the opinion you seem to hold, you are not the dictator here or in life in general, and we are not here to serve your whim; nor are we here to live up to whatever hypocritical self-serving version of reality you think we should. You are, frankly, sounding more and more paranoid and irrational.

How you interpret it is your problem.

I will state that I do not give orders. I believe I stated it multiple times, i.e. "I don't wanna be a moderator," etc.

Apparently you weren't paying attention.

Which is no change as far as I'm concerned.
