I used to lose the power of speech when I had a serious hangover, that's why I wondered. One time a guy kept bugging me for a reply when my head was pounding. I got to the point where I just reached under my pillow and pulled out a gun. He thought I was bluffing, for about two second. In retrospect, firing a gun right then was a bad idea.

One cause of stammering is that the brain is several words ahead of the mouth. I'm betting that's the case here.

I speak in public a lot, but I got trained to keep the "noise" down in the third grade. The teacher had a real things about "and, uh". So every time somebody did that in class the whole group would go "AND, UH!" A few times and you learned better. This was refined in the Navy, where we have to speak clearly and unambiguously when passing messages. Ian can tell you what it's like when you have a stammer on the 2JV circuit.
