Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
So I've seen it and I've learned something: It's better to be ridiculous and bad than boring and dreck. The prequels were at times ridiculous and bad, but at least they established their pay-offs and developed their plot points. The Force Awakens does neither. Things just happen. Characters just do things. Nothing is ever established and it delivers pay-off after pay-off without ever paying the price of plot development which leaves me (as a thinking movie viewer who isn't mesmerized by special effects) almost entirely unmoved by them emotionally and intellectually. The special effects are top notch and it's a new big-screen romp in the Star Wars galaxy but it left the story telling Lucas injected into the franchise far, far away. It did give me the idea for George Lucas' epitaph though: "It's better to be ridiculous than dreck."

The triumph of nihilism-light-sabre then?

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Triumph of franchise name-power over good filmmaking at any rate. It has 95% on Rotten Tomatoes but I think it ranks more around 75% by rights. Everyone gives it a gold star because it's new Star Wars that doesn't have a Jar Jar equivalent and it has excellent visuals glossing over the fact that at no point during the film did it come close to the swell of feeling that any of the original trilogy evoked - even the prequels had moments that made me care about them. The Force Awakens is emotional flatland and don't hold out hope for an intellectually intriguing plot development - there is none.

I enjoyed it. Never thought too hard about Star Wars. Just enjoyed it for what it was.

I have to agree. Saw it yesterday and was disappointed and actually a bit bored. My partner is a huge fan and so as not to spoil it for her (she thought it was wonderful!) I kept my opinion to myself.

Was so bored i walked out before it ended. Only time I enjoyed it was when Harrison Ford and Chewy were onscreen.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

Summary: offspring of former star wars heroes do the same thing their parents did. Forces emerge, light sabers klank. Death star is big and has...trees?or was that some other battle?

OK the trees have to do with a nearby moon and bunker.

I never got the comic book plot in that much detail.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Special effects and hype make up for a substandard storyline like all Abrams stuff. I'll wait for the DVD, fools rushed in....where scumple doesn't waste a dime.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
It's not a shit movie, it's just not a good movie. What gets me is how everyone not only gives it a pass, but gives it a grade of A or A+. What the shit? Did we sell our critical faculties to Disney for the pathetic hope of a cultural artifact that would bond us with our children and the next generation? Fuck me it's like the world has gone full-on retard.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens
It is awesome because it's Star Wars. There's no point in critically comparing it to other movies, other than other Star Wars movies and possibly in some cases other Sci-fi adventure movies, - because the awesomeness of Star Wars simply operates in a different dimension from other movies.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]
