I would try to save him/her by not putting the fear of god up him/her and telling him/her he/she is not going to hell anyway.Kevin wrote:I'd like to know how you'd deal with the revelation that a major atheist icon was actually a convert to Christianity? Would you join the metaphoric lynch mob? or take the Bible from the shelf? or not give a damn?

It's just a sign a weakness. We are only human, not logical robots. No big deal. I have plenty of weaknesses, but not that one.

I would be curious as do their thought process as they converted, especially if they were one who held their convictions strongly. Past that it doesn't change anything, it certainly wouldn't be enough for me to fall into a "True Scotsman" fallacy.
I can live with doubt, and uncertainty, and not knowing. I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. [...] I don’t feel frightened by not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without having any purpose, which is the way it really is, as far as I can tell, possibly. It doesn’t frighten me. - Richard Feynman

Well, C.S. Lewis did essentially that, but I still enjoyed his books-- even the one about his conversion back to Christianity.
As far as present luminaries go, I think I'd be disappointed, but I'd probably assume they'd been deeply frightened and needed to retreat to something comforting and familiar. And I'd feel sorry for them.

I'd feel sympathy at first, I guess, then forget about it. Unless they kept pestering me about it, then I'd tell them to STFU and GBTPB.

LOL. Are you alluding to Antony Flew, the prominent atheist and creator of the True Scotsman metaphor before he became a deist six years ago?ScienceRob wrote:I would be curious as do their thought process as they converted, especially if they were one who held their convictions strongly. The most prominent atheist-turned christian I can think of is C.S.Lewis. I just think "that's regrettable" and move on, Kevin. Why did you ask, and what would your reaction be?

Those alive who have done this heinious act of de-conversion from atheist orthodoxy should be placed on a list and that list be given to prominent militant atheists and groups like Anonymous?

I wouldn't particularly care unless he/she could present some sort evidence that led to the conversion.Kevin wrote:I'd like to know how you'd deal with the revelation that a major atheist icon was actually a convert to Christianity? My lack of belief in a god is the result of a lack of any sort of evidence supporting any of the claims of the existence of a god.

These religious people are outnumbering atheists and a clear threat. This is a social reality not just a war of opinions. Showing weakness is like a red rag to a bull when times change. There is no argument about evidence after your corner is taken by the opponent.MrFungus420 wrote:I wouldn't particularly care unless he/she could present some sort evidence that led to the conversion.Kevin wrote:I'd like to know how you'd deal with the revelation that a major atheist icon was actually a convert to Christianity? I liked Chris Hitchens' response when asked about death bed conversion. He said that the person he was now would certainly never consider it but that it was possible that some future version of himself, half mad with pain and doused in pain-killing drugs might conceivably do so and that we shouldn't set too much store by it cos it wouldn't be him.

I like that too. A not so subtle dig as well as a statement of fact.Xamonas Chegwé wrote:I liked Chris Hitchens' response when asked about death bed conversion.
