Australian Judge orders woman to remove niqab

The prosecution said the woman - identified only as Tasneem - would feel uncomfortable without her niqab, which would affect her evidence.

But the defence said the jury should be able to watch her facial expressions.

I sympathise (acknowledgement, not approval) with the woman's situation (she's 36 and never been out in public without wearing the niqab since 17 years of age), but people aren't allowed to wear balaklava's when appearing in court, either.

The judge says this isn't a precedent. I disagree.

A sensible decision. This is a very different ball-game to proposed general bans in some European countries. No one else has the right to cover their face in a court-room (possibly except for protected witnesses, in extreme circumstances, for excellent reasons), so why should one flavour of delusion entitle you to?

Besides, if the woman is genuinely concerned about feeling too uncomfortable to give evidence, they could offer a video link. I've sat on a jury where once was used and I saw no obvious down sides.

I see no reason at all why she wouldn't be able to do her job while wearing the ḥijāb.

I posted it because the wearing of veils is becoming an issue everywhere - not because I think it's right or wrong.

Anyway, it's been a problem for some time now, the only difference is that Islam has been recieving special treatment since 9/11 and they've been taking advantage of it.
