Do Americans really see the president as a kind of elected absolute monarch?

I think Trump certainly does.

Maybe not an absolute monarch but definitely a absolute dictator.

If, according to the right wingers, ”government does not do anything”, why is this shut down harmful? All they would be doing is regulating anyway. And regulations are bad. Win win! Send Trump to Florida for 2 years, ad we don’t need him either.

Opposition to Trump in GOP is not likely to appear just yet, to solve budget and no wall. Political experts predict Trump opposition to appear in 2020. The GOP candidates want no opponents in primaries. Once they are the party’s candidate, they can talk as if Trump will be gone.

Forbes: Stone and Bannon came up withwall.

In 2014, Trump’s plan to run for president moved into high gear. His political confidant was consultant Roger Stone. “Inside Trump’s circle, the power of illegal immigration to manipulate popular sentiment was readily apparent, and his advisers brainstormed methods for keeping their attention-addled boss on message,” writes Joshua Green, author of Devil’s Bargain: Steve Bannon, Donald Trump, and the Nationalist Uprising. “They needed a trick, a mnemonic device. In the summer of 2014, they found one that clicked.”

Joshua Green had good access to Trump insiders, including Sam Nunberg, who worked with Stone. “Roger Stone and I came up with the idea of ‘the Wall,’ and we talked to Steve [Bannon] about it,” according to Nunberg. “It was to make sure he [Trump] talked about immigration.”
Snip
. “But in January 2015, he tried it out at the Iowa Freedom Summit, a presidential cattle call put on by David Bossie’s group, Citizens United. ‘One of his pledges was, ‘I will build a Wall,’ and the place just went nuts,’ said Nunberg. Warming to the concept, Trump waited a beat and then added a flourish that brought down the house. ‘Nobody,’ he said, ‘builds like Trump.’”

That’s the clear belief of many repubs, God is working through Trump. Not much different from the Divine Right of Kings.

Look, I am no fan of Putin‘s but Russia is a great nation in pretty much every respect. Whenever I need something, research something, I check out what the Russians have done and this almost as a first point of reference. Lovely literature and arts too, I an so happy I am fluent and proficient in Russian, a huge resource to me!
That's awesome. (get over it Rum) In my experience, Russia is a difficult subject. Not only is the Russian history section at the bookstore tiny, but the books I've found tend to be unsympathetic.

Didn't the last president 'shut it down' too?

Did the tax collection stop? Or was it just a make-believe 'shutdown' both times?

You could do worse than to read Hedrick Smith's The Russians. Of course much has changed in the over 40 years since it was first written, but his insights into the culture are still relevant. It's sympathetic to Russians, if not to the Soviet government of that time.

I'm not forgetting that this particular sidetrack developed because somebody didn't want to face the fact that Trump is parroting Russian propaganda. Intellectual dishonesty FTW!
