It's a myth that Americans are "too proud" to do certain jobs. Plenty of farmworkers are Americans.maiforpeace wrote:'Coito ergo sum wrote:Detroit isn't worth nuking. That'll learn 'em!
Semi-rural farms owned by big agribusiness. Even desperately unemployed Americans are still too proud to become farmworkers.
According to the US Department of Labor’s year 2000 statistics, 77% 4 of the non-migrant farmworkers surveyed identified as "US born white" (Not including H2-A guest workers). Of all farmworkers, including the H2-A seasonal/migrant workers - about 20% or so are US born and white. That's 1 in 5. So, clearly, plenty of white, native born Americans ARE willing to do these jobs, and aren't too proud.
We all know why Mexicans are filling the migrant jobs in huge numbers - wages - the Mexicans can travel up here seasonally and make what would be ridiculously low wages for someone who has to pay the cost of living here in the States, but which is an awesome amount of money by Mexican standards.
It has nothing to do with being "too proud" - Americans do tons of horrible, unpalatable jobs. It's the pay.
