Well at least the priest who banned the books is more articulate than the dumb-as-dirt woman from Jesus Camp. But I'm not understanding how these folks can be so offended by a work of fiction, and a fairly innocuous work of fiction at that. But, as the priest said, he'd never read the books and had no intention of doing so

p.s. What gets me is that these folks talk as if Harry Potter were real, and magic were real :?

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

They believe magic IS real, and it comes from Satan. Scares the crap out of them.
"Her eye was on the sparrow. Her mind was on the dove,
But no one cared and no one dared to speak to her of love.
Her eyes are always hooded. Her claws are sharp as steel.
We teach her not to see too much. We teach her not to feel."

Clearly a woman that has trouble not believing any old rubbish she reads in books. :nono:

Yes they do and yes it does - and they believe that works of fiction can teach children witchcraft or at least introduce them to the idea. Never mind that the bibble teaches them about rape, murder, and genocide.

The supernatural that is god is apparently 'normal' and not actually considered 'magic'. Anything else is 'magic' and therefore 'evil'. I suspect this goes way back to driving out the old ways when Christianity was first spreading. An attempt of establishing a hegemony of the magical I think!

If you can believe in a sky fairy that can stop the sun in the sky, turn water into wine, raise the dead, cure the sick and make a woman from a rib, then I guess chocolate frogs and expeliarmus spells are pretty much a given. :hehe:

Actually I don't think it is as simple as that (though I know you weren't expounding a serious point here X). As a Xian in my early adulthood I recall the sense that the world of god was not actually 'supernatural' but normal and part of the real world. Attempts to invoke 'magic;' were either seen as misguided - and a lot of Christians I knew then believed there was no such thing at all - or else the work of Stan (deliberate spelly).

Fucking bullshit either way of course.
