Since when does the DOJ have authority to censor transcripts from a local Florida police department 911 call center? Since never, that's when.

This is not a "federal investigation" in the sense that the DOJ has plenary jurisdiction, it's also a state and local criminal investigation under the authority of the Orlando Police Department and the State of Florida.

Florida open records law clearly states that such tapes are public records. The police chief, the mayor of Orlando and the Governor of Florida should simply release both the tapes themselves and full transcripts and tell the DOJ to go fuck themselves. And I suspect that shortly they will do exactly that, pretty much as soon as the press jumps all over Florida officials to comply with Florida open records laws.

You forgot a few elements, such as:

At least TWO FBI inquiries, both of which poked the pooch.

Obvious signs of both mental disturbance and Islamic fundamentalism left unreported by friends and coworkers.

Conspiracy to commit the crimes on the part of his wife.

Approval of the firearms purchases by the NICS background check system...you know, the one that every gun-banner on earth thinks will solve the problem if only every gun transfer were subject to it...but which check quite literally ALL of the mass killers in the last several years have passed when buying their guns.

While I agree with you that this isn't terrorism, I don't agree with the feds censoring the tapes. Pretending he didn't say "ISIS" isn't the reason it's not terrorism. It's not terrorism because terrorism has to have some broader social or political aim. What were his aims? Where is his manifesto?

It doesn't matter what it "feels" like. The 911 tape is the 911 tape, and editing it to make it inaccurate doesn't change what the guy said. Maybe his 911 message was a ruse, and he was really motivated by something else. Could be. But, maybe he meant what he said and said what he meant. It's certainly an admission against interest, and it is as much a part of the evidence for his motive than the websites he visited. Maybe he just visited gay sites to research the community, find potential targets, etc., and maybe his visits to gay nightclubs were just like a burglar casing a joint. He was working up his nerve, etc.

And, fundamentalist Islam is very homophoboic, so to say "gay rage" doesn't mean that his gay rage didn't come from his Islam.

Loretta Lynch is the Attorney General - a Cabinet post. She's a chief adviser. it's funny how folks never want to ascribe to Obama the actions of his Administration. Back when Bush was president, he was blamed for the actions of individual soldiers in Iraq. If something happened in the Bush Administration, it was Bush's fault. Now, you can't even allude to the fact that this was Obama's Department of Justice, led by Obama's Attorney General, who is one of his top advisers in his Cabinet. I mean, it's so ludicrous to suggest that Obama's policies have anything to do with what his chief Cabinet officials are doing....
