They're also built to stay airborne even after suffering a fair amount of damage. Apparently, it's possible to land one safely with just one engine operational, up to 20% of the wing area gone, and half the tail missing. Though most pilots would rather not have their skills tested to that extent.

However, the cargo bay doors are a potential trouble spot. Boeing opted for outward opening cargo bay doors to maximise loading capacity, and the mechanism they chose to keep the doors sealed has been demonstrated to be, er, less than optimal. This was discovered the hard way on United Airlines Flight 811.

However, the largest number of hull losses has been due to terrorist bombs, and Boeing can hardly be held to account for this. Incorrect maintenance (again, not the fault of Boeing) caused the Japan Air Lines Flight 123 crash, and the Tenerife Air Disaster resulted from a combination of factors, including impatience on the part of Captain Van Zanten aboard the KLM aircraft, and inadequate facilities for handling large wide-body jets at Los Rodeos International Airport, a location that was also heavily afflicted by fog.

747 is a number that reminded me of a film title. I could not recall exactly what it was, but Google came to the rescue. It turned out to be Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Ignoring the typo, all the numbers are there, and in the same order too.

That reminds of when the Luftwaffe was testing the giant Messerschmitt Me 321 transport glider, being towed by 3 twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf 110 fighters. Needless to say, this arrangement was extremely risky, and a test resulted in the lost of all four aircraft and crew ... and full complement of 120 troops.

Isn't that the reason the Luftwaffe ended up sticking six engines on that glider, and turning it into a proper transport plane?

Though it still needed rocket assistance to take off with a full load.

Returning to the 747, two articles in Forbes Magazine online have been pretty scathing about the recent 787 Dreamliner fun and games. The author effectively told Boeing in those articles, "remember what you did with the 747, and to the same with the new aircraft, instead of fucking about with business school money-juggling fantasies".

Forbes don't know their ass from a hole in the ground.

The Dreamliner is the next 747 - it is new tech and will have some issues and the only real issue was the lithium batteries - nothing to do with flying.

First one I can book to Aus in 2015 I'm on it. :D

Yeah, I think the Dreamliner's problems are just teething issues. It's pretty new tech for a commercial airliner, bound to be a few bumps in the road.

My uncle was a flight engineer on 747s for over 20 years, absolutely loves the aircraft, says it's the turbine equivalent of a DC-3. You still see 100 series airframes in use.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

That pic reminds me reminds me, they are shutting down the main runway (15/33) at TSIA this summer. ANC will be brutal. I had a place on the S end of town the last time they shut it down, and dozens of max gross 747s departed over town (ANC is a BIG refuelling stop as well as transpolar and TransPac waypoint) in some hours. The 747 cargo planes especially shake the ground with 100% power as they generate adiabatic fog on their control surfaces and tip vortexes off the wings in tight turns in the tight airspace (Joint Base Elmendorff/Ft Richardson, Lake Hood, Merril Field, Campbell Lake, etc. have the Anchorage Bowl tightly slotted. Then there's those Chugach Mountains you can't see the tops of in the pic...)

Anchorage already has about 100x the air traffic over it as it should for its size, and this construction is going to make the congestion even worse.
