Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson posts video apology

The BBC last night refused to confirm Jeremy Clarkson's future on Top Gear, as he "begged for forgiveness" after appearing to use a racist word on camera.
Mr Clarkson, the Top Gear presenter, had been accused of saying the word “n-----” while reciting the rhyme “eeny, meeny, miney, mo”.
A clip of the scene, filming during the BBC show several years ago but never broadcast, emerged in a tabloid newspaper yesterday, with Mr Clarkson initially saying: “I did not use the N word. Never use it.”
Tonight, he released a video statement “begging forgiveness” for the error, as he admitted he had appeared to “mumble” the offensive word despite attempting not to.
Insisting he had done everything in his power to ensure the scene was not broadcast, he added he “loathed” the word and had not actually said it.

Political correctness is about people not accidentally insulting people, it doesn't stop you doing it deliberately

I call someone a complete cunt, its generally pretty obvious I wish to insult them. In the past if I had called them a negro or homo its possibly I'm using that as a neutral adjective and it's not meant as an insult.

In a political correct world I know full well that's an insult and if I use it then its meant to be one

It wouldn't surprise me if it was used even by people who wanted to abolish slavery a couple of centuries ago.

Words can become so commonly used that no one even realises its offensive and it also depends on context


I was dealing with some Turkish people as part of my job and used the adjective 'Turk' which apparently was offensive. It was used that was as a racial slut in WW1. I really had no idea and I won't do it again because I don't like accidental insulting someone.

Apparently 'Jap' is offensive as well according to some Americans but that not something I aware of in the UK. The world Paki is highly offensive in the UK but I'm heard it used by Americans who I don't actually believe are racist

It's not the word that was negatively connoted. It was the actual attitude towards black people.
Whatever word they had used in the past, wouldn't have changed that.

The word nigger is just like perdiction, instead of prediction. Americans are too dumb to pernounce words properly, that's all.

My dad never used any word for black people, other than nigger. He was born in 1909. He didn't use the word as an insult. It just WAS the word, for what he was saying.
When I was a little kid in the fifties, my paint box had a colour called nigger brown. And there was a the Agatha Christie play, from 1943, ten little niggers.

People object to the word ''nigger'' as if somehow, that was the problem. It wasn't, the problem was that people from that era regarded blacks as inferior. Outlawing the word doesn't outlaw the problem.

Anyway, as far as Clarkeson goes, I never liked him. But ''eenie meanie minie mo, catch a nigger by his toe'', was always the nonsense rhyme that kids used to choose someone to do something, when I was a kid.
That was the words of the rhyme. I don't know when he said it, but it was apparently years ago, and it wouldn't have been so forbidden then.
You have to judge what he said, by the customs of when he said it.
What are they going to do next, dig up Agatha Christie, and make her change the name of ''ten little niggers''? .

It doesnt remove the problem but it does make it easier to identify the really stupid bigots who aren't even clever enough to hide it
