I nearly popped an artery when I heard this.
Methodist Central Hall Westminster, London.
October 19, 2009, London.
Debate: The Catholic church is a force for good in the world
Event Information:
Can anything good really be said of an institution that has such a warped attitude to sex that it tries to stop the world from wearing a condom, is bitterly opposed to gays leading a fulfilled life and regards women as unworthy of officiating in its rituals? That's the standard line of attack by detractors of the Catholic Church (Hitchens and lesser Fry). But who ya gonna call when it comes to finding a good school for your children, when it comes to standing up for the oppressed, when it comes to giving material and spiritual succour to the wretched of the earth?
Speakers for the motion:
Rt Hon Anne Widdecombe MP Conservative MP and Catholic convert.
Archbishop John Onaiyekan Roman Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Nigeria.
Speakers against the motion:
Christopher Hitchens Writer, broadcaster and polemicist, author of the bestselling book "God is not Great".
Stephen Fry Actor, author, comedian and television presenter.
Oh goody goody gum drops.
What have they done?
Libertarianism: The belief that out of all the terrible things governments can do, helping people is the absolute worst.

I don't think it's the first time that Stephen Fry and The Hitch have appeared together for a debate like this. Why does the phrase "Good cop, bad cop" come to mind?

I'd mail my camcorder to someone to get it on Youtube! (Tripod optional.)

Its such a no contest. I really don't now what the Catholic end of it expect to come away with. They've too much dignity to pull punches like Hitch and Fry and by calling the debate Catholicism: A Force for Good? they are in a totally defensive position. They're gonna be jammed up against the ropes with no escape.
Idiots.

Why even bother with that second "o" in the title?

Some religious people just seem to have a death-wish when it comes to things like this. The Hitch in particular will just cut them to pieces.

Oh. I thought you meant this. So much for trying to pre-empt your answer
