Cuts to UK Science Research and Student Grants:

Post by Clinton Huxley » Wed Nov 27, 2013 3:35 pm

http://www.theguardian.com/science/2013 ... onsensical

Student grants: cut
Science budget: cut

The Govt has failed basic numeracy and got its sums wrong. Who pays? The poor and scientists.

I presume this is more of the austerity that the PM announced we would have to endure, from his golden throne at the recent free 4 course Lord Mayor's banquet.

Same happening here with our new conservative government. I wish they'd all die of cancer.

My contempt for the Tories increases every day, which I thought was impossible. My feelings for their Lib-Dem enablers stays roughly the same. It's difficult to get lower than "beneath contempt".

Obviously, it's Blighty's American-forced commitments in Afghanistan that have you so skint. What to do?

Ax the art and music department. After all, if you were that talented you don't need university.

Talent can benefit from formal education, don't axe a thing and refund the whole effing uni, from the politicos' private funds if need be.

Tories. <Anything> spending cuts. Not exactly news, even if it is depressing.

It's amazing how things are so much worse today, than they were forty years ago. As far as social mobility is concerned.

If you haven't got parents with a valuable house, you're fucked.
If you want a degree, you have to go into very large debt. And of course, getting on the housing ladder is the other biggie.
How can you hope to go to University, come out, and buy a house?

I paid no fees at University, I got a grant, and houses and rents were dirt cheap.
And anybody who wanted a job, could get one inside a day.
Anybody today without rich parents, if they had the chance to go back in time forty years, would be crazy not to.
That's progress for you.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

True that talent can benefit from an education, but talent is not often enough a prerequisite for a university grant compared to poverty.
