Mad Men

Post by Coito ergo sum » Mon Apr 30, 2012 2:32 pm

Who watches the television show, "Mad Men?" It's a U.S. show, but maybe they have it over in jolly old England, too.

Last night's episode got a bit crazy.
Trigger Warning!!!1! :
Don learns that his award from the American Cancer Society is hollow. His daughter Sally catches a glimpse of the seedy underbelly of the world of adults. Don's wife Megan sees her unhappy mother (although she doesn't, yet, know about her mother's penchant for blowing guys at parties, just a few feet away from everyone). Pete Campbell may have convinced, with one line, a Marxist college professor that the advertising business isn't all bad. Roger Sterling seems to have figured out a way to get back in the game, professionally and sexually. Peggy is fighting the sexual revolution, and upsetting societal norms by shacking up with a Jewish guy.
It seems like pressure is building up. Something is going to give way in the next few episodes.

This has been one of my favorite shows since it started.

I watched the first few series recently. It was excellent and seems to get better as it goes along.

This newest season proves that...it's really good.

I'm having a hard time deciding between that and Downton Abbey though, as my all time favorite series.

Never have but wish I had since I've heard good things. And because Clinton hates it - what better endorsement?

Huxley has the British "bored" gene. If it doesn't involve clearing one's throat repeated, while maintaining a serious look on one's face, it's considered "boring."

So you must love Downton Abbey then. :{D

Oh now, Downton is on ITV, a very downmarket channel. Won't have it in the house....

I did find season 2 a bit boring, but it seemed to really take off in 3.

I've been disappointed at the decline of Betty Draper over the last two seasons. I mean, she was always a ditz, but at least she was hot.
Trigger Warning!!!1! :
And, what's with that relationship she and her new husband have. It hasn't been focused on, yet, but Betty always appears to be one step away from the lunatic asylum.

Joan's character has become more complex, and she really started wearing her ovaries on the outside when she gave her rapist-doctor husband the boot a couple of episodes ago.

And, Peggy continues to push the sexual revolution envelope. The idea of living together back then -- very controversial, especially among the Catholics. Peggy looked definitely unprepared for the proposal to live together, rather than the marriage proposal. I have a feeling that will not end well.

My wife watches it, so I catch bits and pieces.
I like the men's fashions, and I sometimes wish I could wear a nice suit to work everyday. And smoke openly.
A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.
