I'm curious about this and have a few questions;
I had a look at the free pods listing, however, near the top of the page there's this;
There are still security vulnerabilities in the current release of Diaspora, so please consider ALL information (including username and email) you post to the seeds on these pods as completely public.
Also, I'm not sure I want to hop on a random pod hosted by a single person who I do not know.

And when he was carrying that cross up the hill, any normal realistic bloke would have mule-kicked the guy on the left, clobbered the one on the right, and been over that green hill and far away before you could say "Pontius Pilate." - Arnold Rimmer

I have seven friends who use diasp.eu - I posted a question to them on Diaspora about how well it works. It may take some time before most of them answer, though.
"The internet is made of people. People matter. This includes you. Stop trying to sell everything about yourself to everyone. Don’t just hammer away and repeat and talk at people—talk TO people. It’s organic. Make stuff for the internet that matters to you, even if it seems stupid. Do it because it’s good and feels important. Put up more cat pictures. Make more songs. Show your doodles. Give things away and take things that are free." -
