Brits, what do you think of the EU?

Post by Lozzer » Mon Dec 27, 2010 11:41 am

What are your thoughts on the European Union, do you think it has a positive role in the cultural enlightenment of Britain? Or,, as in popular belief, do you believe it's a pointless bureaucracy and a threat to sovereignty?

I don't personally understand the vitriol against it, particularly in light of the EU's challenging of British insular attitudes.

If you believe in 'secession' from it? Explain your take on the matter.

a good thing. and cheap.

fighting wars with each other would be more expensive. and whilst I have nothing against stabbing Jerry with a bayonet, I don't like mud. nor being stabbed with a bayonet.

EU is rather like the UN - it's fundamental purpose is to be a muddle.

Britain leaving? LOL. and do what? UK is a pissed arsed little island on the edge of the world - the days of being able to impose our will on others has long since gone. Standing on our own 2 feet would feel very cold.

I want an EU with Russia in it - or at least with associate (trading) membership. With Russia, Jerry, the French and Brits together we might not rule the rest of the world, but push comes to shove we could kill every last one of them.....including those slitty eyed fuckers who send us Xmas every year.

There really isn't a realistic alternative - that's what I think. I also think anything which dissolves nationalism, however gradually, is a good thing.

I'm with you wrt to my attitude to nationalism, but I don't think that because there isn't yet an "ism" which defines a world government, that it's necessarily a good thing. I'm not saying it's definitely not a good thing, just that it's naive to just assume that it will be better .. that there wouldn't be pitfalls and downsides .. Ultimately, I can see us being forced back to more local means of survival due to resource issues .. Any notions of world unity and global peace are pie in the sky.

Don't mind. The standard objection is that its being used by bureaucrats and to run a gravy train. Is there a government body or government itself that isn't?

I love European culture and I hate the fact that we are a poky, insulated little island. I like what we are becoming. 1950s Britain is too terrible to even contemplate.

I'm not a Brit, but it seems logical to pool together with the other countries of Europe for commercial reasons, if not for many other reasons. Together you are more powerful in many ways than apart.
