The now the election is over the fun starts thread
They are going to have a merry old time now! There doesn't seem to be a viable government no matter how you mix it up. If the LIb Dems do form an alliance with the Conservatives they will fall out almost immediately. Gordon Brown is looking embarrassing holding on and it is hard to see the numbers working for them in any case.
For our Merican cousins, Gordon Brown (the PM) has the right to try to form a government, but unless he has a majority of people he can rely on voting the way he wants he won't be able to make it work, in which case he goes to the Queen and asks her to 'dissolve' parliament. Then The Conservatives get to have a go. If that doesn't work it means another election.
In the mean time nothing happens in government other than day to day management. As an example I met with a regional advisor from our education ministry (the DCSF) today. He is out of a job soon because his current one is on the back of a labour policy. He has no idea, and nor do I, as a result, who if anyone will replace him and what the education policies will be. The longer this goes on the longer this state of affairs continues. Of course if we get a coalition government they will argue over every piece of legislation and it will take an age to agree any policy in any case!
Yahooo!

On the off chance you aren't kidding, the Queen is our head of state. She does not have any say in things, such is the way in which we have established democracy here, but she does the constitutional stuff from time to time. One of her duties arises when an incumbent Prime Minister goes to her and says he/she can't form a new government. At that point she 'ceremonially' dissolves parliament.Bella Fortuna wrote:Wait.... you guys elected a new queen?

The odds of whatever government is formed breaking down in a short period seem pretty high. The best strategy for the big two may be to actually stay out of government, wait for the shit to hit the fan and clean up in the next election which will probably happen within the next two years.
At least I'm housebroken.

Maybe the UK could take a cue from Naboo. They elect their Queens, who serve no more than two terms.Rum wrote:On the off chance you aren't kidding, the Queen is our head of state. Because he wants the cheese form the moon, of course.
"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

The moon is not made of cheese. It's made of stewing steak.
