I assume this is strictly for Americans, as I'm not aware of any other country having the issue.
Remove "God" from your money! That's about it, really.
Do any of you do this, or have you done it? I wish I could post a smiley on my money...

I can see why someone might be inspired to do that, but I wouldn't. I enjoy the subtle humor of such a
worshipful motto on our
money.

You should break into the printing plant and doctor the plates to swap D & G.
Anything else is just half hearted.

Isn't it against the law to deface currency?
(this may be one of many of my illusionary memories...)
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?
And my gin!

Use the Euro ... it's a God-free currency.

I'll confess to having crossed out the 'T' in TRUST on a few notes the last time I visited the States.
Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

Careful, when Saddam suggested he might start using the Euro to sell oil in on the international markets, all hell broke lose. Not that I'm suggesting the war was about oil or anything that cynical.

When I spend the $20s, and receive $1s, $5s, or $10s in change, I "de-God" each bill before passing it along. No merchant or business has ever refused to accept this "godless" money.
Good stuff. That's an admirable commitment to protest.
However, are merchants legally compelled to refuse the defaced bills or to remove them from circulation?

I believe when you get down the nitty gritty in the UK it is illegal to deface currency but you are never going to be charged.
I can't remember if that's the case in the US, but it probably is. It's something to do with, I think, the bank still owning that note or coin it gave you.

In many countries it is custom to refuse damaged notes because some banks will either not accept them or will put the depositor through a fair bit of red tape.

It used to be, but no longer. Since 1984 if my memory is working properly.

In the US I believe it is not illegal to write on the bills as long as the bill remains intact and can be spent normally.

When you think of all the cocaine or meth residue that is on our money I wouldn't worry too much about defacing the god part.
