"banning the possession of handguns" would be an extreme law. That's not the case in European countries, either. So, low support is understandable. 60%, a majority, is in support of stricter gun laws.

If this second question was asked after the first question on banning all hand guns, there is a psychological effect that could have influenced people to answer no to the second question after hearing the first question even though they are in support of stricter laws, because they associated both questions.

Being in support for stricter laws and not in favour of banning all hand guns does not require squaring the circle. Both Germany and the Netherlands have stricter gun laws than most US states and still don't ban all hand guns.

Well it is obviously a plot to make the legislators ban guns. Only thing is it seems to promote them rather than reduce their numbers.
