Re: Fraternity Bans the Wearing of Confederate Uniforms
The Empire ended when a) Palpatine was killed by his subordinate and b) the Rebel Alliance destroyed the second Death Star. The Skywalker/Palpatine conflict was an insignificant subplot in the greater political struggle between post-Coruscantian democrats and the totalitarian Empire. After the Death Star was destroyed and Palpatine killed, the rest of the Imperial fleet needed to be dispersed before the Rebel Alliance could establish a new democratic political order. Even a generation later, during the Yuzhaan-Vong invasion, the Imperial Remnants were still a big problem.Gawdzilla wrote:Who did it? The Sith. For whose benefit? The Sith's. In the US racism and slavery are linked so closely they can be viewed as the same thing.Coito ergo sum wrote:You did. You said it represents racism.Martok wrote:Only those who live in denial would argue the confederate flag represents anything other than slavery.Coito ergo sum wrote:

True, to an extent. But being proud of your home turf is a common human failing.Martok wrote:In the US racism and slavery are linked so closely they can be viewed as the same thing.

However, being proud of the Confederacy, knowing what it stood for and why they chose to break away from the rest country, seems rather bizarre.Gawdzilla wrote:True, to an extent. IF I were a god fearing Christian I wonder about the meaning of that tornado that plowed through Yazoo Mississippi last night. Haley Barbour is from there and he uttered that statement saying slavery didn't mean diddly.

Many of those who express pride in the Confederate history don't agree with what you attribute as "what it stood for." You think they're wrong, of course. But, they disagree.Martok wrote:However, being proud of the Confederacy, knowing what it stood for and why they chose to break away from the rest country, seems rather bizarre.Gawdzilla wrote:True, to an extent. Moreover, one might argue that the United States "stood for" slavery (and some do make that argument) since it was founded by many slave owners. Even one of the greatest founding fathers, Thomas Jefferson, owned slaves, and so did the Father of our country - George Washington. I'm "proud" of this country's heritage too, though.

I love my motherland (Croatia) also. But if I see some screwed up shit there, I'll be the first one to point that out too.

You think the Confederacy stood ONLY for slavery?Martok wrote:However, being proud of the Confederacy, knowing what it stood for and why they chose to break away from the rest country, seems rather bizarre.Gawdzilla wrote:True, to an extent.
