Even without the "So help me Sky-Fairy", that's just fucking anal. (No pun intended)
I wonder why they don't use the word "king" among the foreign authorities they are to renounce. We have "prince," but not "king." I'm not even sure what country had "potentates." That sounds to me like "grand poobah."

No, but Obama does.

If a democratic country wants to ban this sad sleazy industry, good luck to them.
I would vote for the same in this country, if it was proposed.
That's what democracy means. You make the laws that the country wants.
And this is a good law.

Good for you! Much like a good Christian would do!

I wouldn't vote to bar two consenting adults from engaging in a non-violent activity in a private establishment. But, then again, that's because I'm not an uptight moralist, who seeks to impose his own morals and sensibilities on others.

Democracy is not doing what 'the country wants' at all, how fucking absurd.

You're talking crap again. There is nothing private about strip clubs. That's the point. It's selling nudity as a business.
You vote for the kind of country you want to live in. I would vote for a country without strip clubs. And faith schools. And without the death penalty.
You can't please everybody. A democratically elected govornment has the right to ban things, or even to kill you if you get convicted of a capital offence.

No a democratically elected "govornment" does not have the right to ban things on moral grounds.

Mistermack makes a reasonable, if fairly authoritarian, point here.
Too bad for him such a vote will never come up. :hehe:
But I look forward to voting to legalize marijuana. That'll come up more and more over the next few election cycles. :smoke:
And if Mistermack thinks his vote will cancel mine, I shall point out that that'll only be temporary. I'll outlive him.

You advocate banning strip clubs because the majority wants it. but you are against the death penalty, which the majority of most populations also wants.

What about the charity strip clubs for the poor?
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. Basically "I don't know and I'm not going to look at any evidence because I'm quite happy on this fence."

That's just how I would vote. Democracy doesn't work with a referendum on every law. We vote for lawmakers, and have to live by the laws they pass. This is better than having a vote on every subject, because most voters are incredibly stupid, and believe anything they read in the newspapers. So we would end up with whatever laws Rupert Murdoch wanted.

I don't regard strip clubs as a fundamental human right. The death penalty removes the most fundamental right of all. Not quite in the same league.

And Ian, I would vote to legalise pot myself. I don't get your point.

My point was that you were correct about what can happen in a democracy. But I overestimated your level of uptightedness; I figured someone likely to vote to ban strip clubs of all things would also want to keep marijuana illegal. Don't know where in the history of American conservativism I would ever have gotten that idea. :ask:

Nothing private about a strip club? Who owns them? The government? We have public strip clubs?????? Who new! I wonder if they needs-base the lap dances at the state-run boob-stores....

You sure can vote for whatever you like to vote for, but but that doesn't mean you're not imposing your morals on others when objecting to whether a grown person dances and removes her clothes in a private bar full of adults.

Yes - many things are voted on because people find them morally distasteful -- like, locking women up in jail cells for getting money in exchange for doing what they'd be otherwise free to do for nothing. But, it's still moralizing. Puts you in, well ....company.
