I must say, Australia are being a very good neighbor.
I wonder who is paying for the search? It sounds like an expensive business. And with little chance of success, by the sound of it.
The news that they were originally investigating false bleeps from the black boxes isn't very reassuring.
If there is something in the water that can make a similar noise, it doesn't fill one with confidence.
Also, one snippet was that the boxes bleep once every minute. No wonder the batteries run down so fast. If they were set to ping once every ten or fifteen minutes, on the dot, they would have had a year to find them by audio.
I haven't heard of any proposed changes, so I suppose they are happy that this is a one-off, and it should all be ok for the future.
