It's the seventh-strongest earthquake ever recorded.
Fortunately, modern construction in Chile is as earthquake-safe as modern construction can be, after the example of the 1960 quake. But older buildings have collapsed in this one. The other bit of good news is that its timing - 3:30AM local - means that almost everyone was at home. Certainly people have died when old adobe homes collapsed, but there were no crowds in the larger downtown buildings to be trapped in huge piles of rubble.

Don't forget to praise merciful god that the dead heathens are in hell!
You know, come to think of it, I haven't heard anyone seriously spouting that nonsense this time...

That is about another earthquake a few months back that struck near American Samoa. Western Samoa took the brunt of it though. I think the death toll ended up quite a bit higher than 14 in the end too.
The tsunami from this quakes seems to be pretty mild: around a meter high.

Here's your best tsunami coverage:

About 1.75 hours until it hits the Big Island.

I am far enough inland that it won't be a problem, and by the time it gets to Queensland it won't be 9 metres tall but OMG!

Where did you read that? I found 9 feet somewhere above your post. (link me, pretty please?)
Sorry, 9 feet - I was tired and forgot that not everyone is on metric.

After the Haiti quake a poster on a [defunct] forum argued quite seriously over a few pages that god sent earthquakes to enable other people to show charity by making donations, and to help him (and possibly others, he was willing to share the love around) to grow spiritually.
Friar Barnadine: Thou has committed--
Barabas: Fornication! But what was in another country; and besides, the wench is dead.

They have closed all the beaches here for the tidal wave warnings.

I'm in the path of it. In fact it should be arriving right about now. To bad I'm stuck at work or I'd go watch it. (stupid risk I know, but stupid risks make like more fun sometimes)
