careful about the "non reciprocal" bit.

While some systems don't expect countergifts, what's expected is prestige and its corollary, influence.
The paper covers all forms of giving they could think of categorising.... and there really were several fully non-reciprocal forms discussed.

I like to just giggle and increase it to a laugh and then get a bit manic and close the door. Or just stand staring in silence at them. You can't have more fun on a doorstep than with JWs. I promise you.
More stalking them should be done Knocking on their door would be fun

Obligatory:

"The fact is that far more crime and child abuse has been committed by zealots in the name of God, Jesus and Mohammed than has ever been committed in the name of Satan. Many people don't like that statement but few can argue with it."

Ever since I've watched Orgazmo from Trey parker and Matt Stone I've not been able to keep a straight face with Mormons. :awesome:

I've only had one JW come to my door. They had their van parked right behind my suv (with a RDF bumper sticker on it). The kid came to my door with his pamphlets in hand, mumbled a few things, stared at my snarling dogs and was too scared to look at me. I kinda felt bad for him so I didn't tell him off or anything, just let him say his bit, told him I wasn't interested then said goodbye.

I'd like to think I would be coolly mocking but, the last time I encountered smart-suited street preachers, their "Have you heard the good news about Jesus?" took me by surprise and all I managed was an angry "isn't it about time you grew up?".

Not the wittiest riposte...
"Wooberish" - a neologism for woo expressed in gibberish.

If I ever come visit you, remind me of asking you to let me read that... completely gratuitous (yet ritualized to tome point?) gifting as part of a culture seems weird to me, but you obviously have access to data I don't.

They were knocking on doors and no doubt taking the regular rejections they were no doubt receiving as service to the Lord.

One of them saw me and with a big smile on his face came up to me and said 'Can I tell you the good news about the gospel'?

I felt reakky angry for some reason - and I thought to myself 'why hold back', so I replied, 'No you can't. I am an atheist and I think what you believe is foolish, silly, irrational and that it has no basis in truth or reality. You should get a life'!

..and walked off. The young man no doubt felt even better knowing the Lord was sending him evil sinners to test him and conform to him that he was indeed in possession of the grace of the Lord.

The twat! :nono:
Dressed in black? Probably Mormons rather than JWs... Just as crazy, though. ;)

I've mentioned this before, I am fascinated what these crazy cults think of each other!

Mormons, 7th day adventists, Jehovahs witnesses...

Do they get seriously pissed off with each other? I would love to have a whole lot of them (throw in some Southern Baptists and some evangelicals as well...) locked together in a room for a day or two. The lolz would be immense! :hehe:
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?

I'll dig the book out and see if there is an online version of the same paper.

When my parents first got married a couple of JWs came to the house they were living at, my dad answered the door covered in grease from the cars he had been working on all day and a beer in his hand. He just looked at them and asked what the hell they wanted. The JWs left without saying a word.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life
