I havn't read the rest of the thread but just replying to this video because Pie is always a laugh. Although they raise important points in the video it's not entirely correct because, while yes it is illegal to pay people of different genders different amounts for the same work, that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

It's often entirely up to the employer/manager to decide what work people should do and assess whether work done is equal, and there's no clear way of measuring let alone enforcing that. In larger organisations this can often be better structured with clearly defined job rolls and performance targets, but in many companies decisions of hiring, salary negotiations, performance assessments, and offers for career progression are entirely decided by management on an individual employee basis, and there's no easy way for an employee to even know if they're being discriminated against let alone do anything about it. There's still a huge amount of room for gender based pay inequality and discrimination to take place, and you can be pretty sure in some circumstances it does.

On the pay gap generally, yes it's very difficult from aggregated averaged data to draw any clear conclusions about specific companies with high pay gaps. But the fact that the vast majority of companies have pay gaps that favour men does show that in the world of work as a whole there is still something very unequal that needs to be addressed.

What a surprise - if you look in a system that isn't fair, you find unfairness.

If mens wages were fair, you could make everyones wages match them, and have fairness. That isn't the case, though.

The best negotiators will generally get the highest pay.
The tallest people will generally get the highest pay.
The female people will generally get the highest pay.
The male people will generally get the highest pay.

I'm positive I can find stats to back up all these inequities, and more. How do we decide which of these groups deserve 'fair pay', and what that amount should be? Wages set by government? By whichever workers have the resources to take legal action on their own behalf? Whichever group has the best lobby group?

If you want a group paid fairly, I think all you can do is hire a group, and pay them fairly. I just don't see a practical approach, in a competitive world.
