Correlation ≠ causation. The act of carrying a knife does not magically make one more likely to be stabbed.
Well that's true but if you're an idiot who lives in that environment and needs to carry a knife the causation is your idiocy and the stupidity your death. Don't get into a culture that carries knives and you probably wont get stabbed, although no one can promise that, some people are just unlucky. Shit happens and then you die. The majority of knife crime happens amongst criminals or those of a recidivist nature, who can say what causes that?
Are you trying to say there is no correlation or causation because I think that is erroneous nonsense.

There's no doubt that there is a correlation between people who carry a knife and people who get stabbed. However, that is not to say that carrying a life makes you inherently more likely to get stabbed. What causes these people to be more likely to be stabbed is their behavior. If I carry a knife around all day because I use it for work, the odds of me being stabbed are no higher than they would be if I wasn't carrying it. If anything, they're lower, since now I at least have the knife to defend myself with should the need arise through no fault of my own. However, if I'm a member of a violent gang with lots of enemies, and I'm engaging in their activities, my odds of getting stabbed are quite high. I'd probably be very likely to also be carrying a knife, but if I get into a fight with rival gang members I'll likely be stabbed whether or not I remembered to bring my knife with me that afternoon.

If you carry a knife for self-defence, how you employ it is important. If you draw it at the first sign of trouble you are rather likely to be stabbed.

No disagreement, a little bit of sense factors into it obviously.

Dagda said nothing about correlation or causation. The claim was no more and no less than that "people who carry knives are much more likely to be stabbed than those who don't."

Fair enough, though saying that in response to a post talking about carrying a knife for defensive purposes gives the impression that he was saying that carrying a knife will put you at higher risk for being stabbed.

Sikh mother packs the little Sikh kiddies off on their merry way to skool, making sure they have their sarnies, a clean uniform, and not forgetting their honourable Kirpan. Dishonour without it.
Bully kicks off in PE class and gets sent back to the changing room, steals said knife. Later a child is found bleeding to death in the locker room..
Not the fault of the Sikh, naturally.

Yes, that's what he said. So, the question is: Where is the evidence for that claim?
I've heard similar claims being made about people who keep fire arms (they are more likely to be shot themselves), and I have found studies supporting them statistically, but right now I can't be arsed hunting them down again.

in that case there is no disagreement, the statistic only refers to people who carry them for self defence in public. Not Samurai Warriors or Carpenters.

I think the kids of gangstaz and rappers should be allowed to carry guns to school.
