I don't think the fans feel like they are necessarily owed anything, but there is an understandable sense of disappointment. think it's an appropriate response when what used to be captivating and interesting material from honest and passionate musicians becomes bland and mediocre.
What I've found with a few discussions I've had lately is this self-satisfaction that people express with their proffessed open mindedness. In realty it ammounts to wilful ignorance and intellectual cowardice as they are choosing to not form any sort of opinion on a particular topic. The term 'sold out' refers to betrayal. If the fans don't expect a particular sort of submission and allegiance then they wouldn't use the term.

UB40 - a pretty decent reggae outfit with a political slant. They produced a few rocking albums in the early 80s and then...

A fucking decade of lame covers of classic reggae songs that were done waaaaaaaay better by the original Jamaican artists. Reeeeed reeeeed weeeeeen? :pawiz:

The money.

Which came first, the band or the fans? Who made the music that the fans think they have right to dictate direction over?

I don't think I have a right to dictate what a band produces. If I like it I listen and buy, if I don't I don't.

The band came first but is not sustained without the fans.

It's not sustained without money either.

Right, but the money comes from the fans.

Bands are entertainers. Entertainers, to make a living doing that, require a paying audience. An audience does not buy tickets or cds or merchandising (T shirts) if they don't like the music.

1. Not, it doesn't just come from the fans.
2. They will still have fans if their music is reaching a wider audience. In fact, they will have more fans.

Selling out is abandoning one fan base to attract a larger, more lucrative one. There are artists that do not do this and still achieve commercial success. There are artists that do this and either fail utterly because they misread the market or they gain some short term success and then fizzle out after one or two hits.

There are also artists who spend their lives playing what they want to play, how they want to play it for a small but loyal fan base and still making a decent living at it. Some of these artists I like a lot. I'll buy their CDs, even if I've already downloaded them, and come out to see them when they come through the area, often dragging my friends with me.

They'll probably never be millionaires, but they'll be ok with the material that they're playing.
