So did my father, not something I ever want to see again.

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

The last thing I would advise somebody to do is commit suicide. From what I can tell, there are always other options available to most people most of the time, and I would hope that anybody contemplating such an act would seek help and find reasons to live. (Of course, if they did it, it would be the last thing they did.) Once again, this thread is not about giving advice for anybody to do anything, and it's not about the moral and ethical issues regarding suicide. That being said, there is a long tradition in philosophy, including the writings of Camus, Locke, Mill, Hobbes, Kant and many others where they address this issue.

In my lifetime, I have known a number of people who commited suicide, several by hanging themselves. In all cases, I had not seen these people in years, and they lived long distances from me, so we never talked about what they might or might not do. I am more interested in why somebody would choose hanging as the method to do themselves in since it involves possible complications and has whatever probability for failure that it has. It strikes me as an irrational decision, but I also get it that somebody who decides to commit suicide may not be rational.

When I was twelve I - Edit: I've change my mind about putting this on the internet at the moment, sorry - tried to run away and hide.

Yeah, I used to have a few problems.

I once slit my wrists after a night of drinking and heartbreak. I put rubber bands around my wrists to cut of the blood circulation so my veins would be easier to cut, luckily the knife wasn't sharp enough and I just ended up with a couple of scars and a terrified roommate.
I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

Psychoserenity and Twoflower, I am truly glad that both of you did not succeed at doing yourselves in. I hope that both of you have found many reasons to feel good about your lives.

I am never going to hang myself but I do intend to be "hanging" around on this earth for a long long time
Just because more people believe Jesus is the son of God and not the son of Satan does not make it any truer.

Well, there might be a little suffering but you pass out quick. I think I would prefer it to shooting a bullet in the head. I am not into blood.

Time becomes relativistic very quickly when you're in a situation like that. Some of the "miraculous" feats done in combat can be attributed to the person having a sense of time that all of proportion with the people around him.

Problem with suicide, from my point of view, is that the insurance companies won't pay out, and I'd hate to see all those premiums go to waste.

When I was "missing" from the forum for a while, I was close to making the attempt at times.

In the US you can get policies that exclude suicide for the first two years.

I've been there a couple of time. One time all I had to do was stand still, everything else would have happened without further assistance from me.
