There is nothing new here. It has been known for decades that bacon is carcinogenic. However, like all other poisons, it is dose responsive. So if you eat it in small quantities you probably have nothing to worry about. If you are a bacon-aholic, though, your chances of early death do increase a lot.

Actually, all smoked foods are carcinogenic. Iceland is the nation with the highest rate of consumption of smoked fish and smoked meat, and it has a much higher than most other nations rate of lip, tongue and throat cancer.

That doesn't prove the link. Iceland also has more volcanoes than nearly any other country.
Hence more oral cancers?

Have to agree here. A correlation does not prove a cause! All it does is lend circumstantial evidence to an hypothesis.

And "like all other poisons, it is dose responsive"? Citation please, Groper?

Similarly with "Actually, all smoked foods are carcinogenic"? Prove it!

I'm doomed. Just back from four nights in London, staying in a hotel where we had a 'full English' every morning consisting off bacon, sausage, fried egg, beans (not to metio0n the mushrooms etc)

Arggghhh!

You might live if you didn't have the black pudding.

I've decided that I need to cut back on red meat, so tonight is grilled bacon wrapped, ham and cheese stuffed chicken breasts, instead of deep fried bacon wrapped, bacon and cheese stuffed bacon.

I'm all about healthy eating.

To Xamonas

The above reference from the American National Institute of Health shows the link between smoked foods and cancer.

Here, for you, is another unsupported assertion, which also happens to be correct.

Smoke from most sources contains cancer causing chemicals. If you breathe smoke, whether from burning wood, coal, tobacco, marijuana, incense, or cow dung, you increase your chance of developing cancer - mainly lung cancer.

More than that, but breathing smoke increases your risk of emphysemia, asthma, and a range of respiratory ills. Millions of people globally die each year from breathing smoke from fires in the home.

The breathing smoke health effect is probably true to a degree as a generalisation, but different types of smoke will vary in their carcinogen content, and the amount breathed in will have a large effect. However, there is not necessarily a connection to smoked foods. The amount of actual carcinogen on the surface may be very low indeed (depending on the method of smoking), and the method of ingestion is different.
Chemicals such as nitrites used in some (but not all) preserved meats are a much more likely cause of cancer.

Benzene is a major constituent of woodsmoke. Not something you want to increase your consumption of if you wish to reduce your risk of cancer.

Here's a decent list of the other shit getting stuck to your smokey meats.

A vegetarian diet may correlate with lower number of instances of colon cancer but correlates also with higher number of instances of other kinds of cancer, such as pancreatic cancer (forgot where I read this) mainly due to the high intake of carbohydrates and shortage of protein. Poor Steve Jobs!
