But if asked to defend your bible-based argument against taking an oath strapped to a lie detector, the damn thing would explode!

I don't believe in lie-detectors.

someone is taking the piss and trying to wind people up. there is already an option to affirm, rather than swear on any myth book.

As I understood the OP, they were discussing the possibility of removing the God or bible reference completely, rather than, as you correctly point out, allowing an optional affirm...

It has now been decided that swearing on the Bible will not cease but carry on as before. There already exists an affirmation for the non religious and it has been so for a significant period of time. Though one magistrate did suggest that it had to stay because religious freedoms were being seriously compromised. Which is complete nonsense. We as a democracy allow freedom of expression and one way that manifests itself is through freedom of religion. And we are one of the most liberal nations on Earth in relation to this. So I wish sometimes that Christians would realise this. No one here gets persecuted for following any of the majors so a bit less melodrama from them would be appreciated. I would defend to the death their right to believe as long as it did not impinge upon the freedom of others. So I hope they stop playing the martyr card now

'' Yeh, mon, like, I swear, innit, I mean, iss true, on my muvver's life, I ent shittin you, man.
Innit. ''
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
