I've heard this name but never bothered finding anything of theirs to listen to. Sounds like that may have been a wise move in light of opinions here...

Audley Strange wrote:Well in short. I found them dull and insipid and they plagued the eighties like a malingering flu. I cannot imagine them ever going into the recording studio after "signing off" and ever saying anything more about their own music that "yeah, that'll do." To me, they were a faux-reggae band that turned everything they touched into pub muzak and they should have known better.Cormac wrote:I love folk music, but M&S are as boring as their initials suggest.
And what is wrong with UB40?

They had a few good songs in the early 80s - like "One in Ten" and so on. For a bandtgat bought there instruments from te proceeds of a dodgy ar accident claim, they did alright.
And they beat the likes of One Direction into a cocked hat...

Well I wasn't a fan of Present Arms, but then reggae grew thin for me very quickly anyway. Fuck them... Mumford and Sons, I just don't understand.

bleh
The latest fad is a poverty social. Every woman must wear calico,
and every man his old clothes. In addition each is fined 25 cents if
he or she does not have a patch on his or her clothing. If these
parties become a regular thing, says an exchange, won't there be
a good chance for newspaper men to shine?

I don't understand their popularity. The music is marginally OK, but if you like folk there are a raft of better choices. If it's the slight bluegrass undertones then get some real bluegrass.
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

There are some excellent "Modern Folk" bands around:
Bellowhead
Spiers & Boden
Eliza Carthy
Laura Marling
Johnny Flynn
Lisa Knapp
All of whom are more than worth a listen - do your ears a favour and hunt them down on youtube. But Mumford and Sons, for some inexplicable reason, get the big bucks, the plaudits and the fame.
The trouble is, pick any genre and there are equally bizarre popularities abounding. UB40 was an excellent example - how they managed to become mega while the likes of Steel Pulse faded is a crime against talent! I can only put it down to some serious cock-sucking going on in the music industry.
